Organic Farming in India

Organic Farming in India

Only two percent of India's land is under Organic Farming. Only one state Sikkim resisted fertiliser lobby and made the state fully organic state.

Strong political will is needed to become a peoples leader. Pawan Chamling announced the Sikkim Organic Mission in 2010. By 2015, Sikkim declared itself first organic state in India. This move benefited 66000 farming families.

Sikkim is a rain fed agriculture economy. Hence Organic farming came naturally to them. The State helped the farmer’s transition by providing support, supplying them with organic seeds as well focused on developing local organic seeds. The state gradually banned chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Sikkim gradually phased out subsidies through bold political will. It trained farmers in producing bio composts. The Sikkim Organic Brand helped it improve its crop yields and marketing produce to both domestic and international markets.

Ladakh is endeavouring to become a certified organic UT by the year 2025. Yogi Adityanath government in UP has formed 700 clusters of organic farming along the banks of the Ganga River.  Kolkata is building a organic fertiliser hub at Rajarhat. Central Govt has launched the “Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana” (PKVY) which is an elaborated component of Soil Health Mission  within National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture.  Organic farming is promoted through adoption of organic village by cluster approach.

India needs large scale bio fertiliser manufacturing units as well certification agencies in every state. Currently the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) standards for accreditation have been recognized by the west as equivalent to their own standards.

TTD in Andhra Pradesh wanted to offer organic food to devotees but social media misinterpretations made it to drop the plan. This initiative was to promote organic farming by entering into contract with farmers engaged in organic farming. Currently all prasadams and naivedyams for deity are being made with desi cow ingredients.
