Why is Huckleberry Finn loved by many

Why is Huckleberry Finn loved by many
Arjun Reddy

Why is HUCKLEBERRY FINN a role model for many creative people? There has been a significant trend towards a person who defies the system, is fond of drinking/smoking and lives live by his own rules instead of adhering to systemic rules. Several Movies highlight the same just like Dons/Rowdies were role modeled in the 90s movies.

We found a novel answer in the Novel “The Peer” where the logic was explored why people love a person who lives his own life even he is a negative role model with many vices. This novel explored the mind of a boy who in school time itself felt that Huckleberry Finn led his own life and had to be emulated. His mind reflects the attitude of the young generation of today who are vexed with the rote education system they were thrusted upon in school. Arjun Reddy movie characater was loved by Youth despite him not being the right model for youth. A person who is bereft of responsibilities, always drunk even while performing operations is not the right model. The logic that he can perform operations even when drunk is not obviously acceptable. Second, his single minded obsession with a girl even after she is married.

The below excerpts from the Novel, “THE PEER” help us how this develops in the school times.

Thus ended the story of Huckleberry Finn. Did you like this story? Any questions?” asked the English teacher. Mahesh’s was the first hand to rise: “Madam, do you know where he lives?” The whole class erupted in laughter. But Mahesh was actually serious.

This was the only story they had read which had a boy so much like him – he hated school, made his own rules, did not need to wear a uniform and enjoyed the outdoors. He was like Mani in Malgudi Days.

If sensitive Kiran madam had been there, she would have immediately caught on to why Mahesh wanted to meet Huckleberry. Huckleberry Finn used to enjoy himself without going to school. He could be untidy and there was no one to shout at him. He could go wherever he wanted. Mahesh wished he would have that much freedom for himself. School was so boring! There was so much to learn outdoors but here, they wanted to teach everything from books. In his young mind, Mahesh understood that the education that Huckleberry got from life was very important. He sincerely prayed for such a life. But neither his classmates nor his teacher understood the depth of his yearning. His wish would come true a few years later.

Mahesh also admired Huckleberry and Mani for their confidence in being different. It was a confidence that he lacked. Mani could do what he wanted and so could Huck. In both stories, Mahesh did not bother about the main characters, Tom Sawyer and Swamy. This passion for non-conformism would remain a lifelong strength and although he did not know the term, the good friends he made would all be non-conformists. He simply liked anyone who lived life on his/her terms. He was also drawn to artists later in his life. He felt that artists drew on their inner child while his inner child was suffocating and longing to come out and he did not know how to allow him to express himself. Pioneers, path-setters, people who followed their hearts – this interested him. Be it unique food or innovative products or an alternative lifestyle, Mahesh was drawn to them all. He had loved the word “freedom” from childhood since it was from childhood that he had felt trapped in a mental prison.

It also helped that neither Huck nor Mani were smart looking. Huck was called untidy while Mani had that long shirt on him and always carried a club. What he did not like, ultimately, in the story, was the attempt to make Finn be like the others. In Mani’s case, Mahesh did not like Rajam leading the show just because he was rich."
