Elderly the most vulnerable to Covid-19

Elderly people above the age of 65 are the most vulnerable to Covid-19. In Spain, they accounted for nearly 30% of all deaths. The elderly died in their nursing homes. In New York state, people above 65 yrs accounted for 75%+ of all deaths but just 13% of cases of April 19, 2020.

Nearly 70% of the people dead in New York in that age group had pre-ailments. 60% of all cases in the 75 yrs+ age group were hospitalized and 28% of those cases were dead. What it does tell us that since the senior care homes have people who are restricted to the care home, any visitor carrying the virus can affect almost everyone in the house.

The rapid deaths in this age group are also indicator of their lack of immunity to these virus. While this age group has highest number of hospitalizations, those with pre-ailments hence got hardest hit if they were not healthy already. If the person is very weak, frail and already has several chronic diseases , then the chances of him fighting this virus are less when compared to a healthy person in that age group.

So the key is to develop immunity in the elderly who are the most vulnerable to this disease. The ones who are admitted into ICU's directly have more chances of failing since their natural food stops from that day. Its only fluids that go in. That does not give immunity to a already frail body. Thats where the system collapses sometimes due to fluid overload.

In Spain, between elderly and young, young were hospitalized. In nursing homes, military found residents dead in their beds. Staff had left them and fled. Mass graves came up fast. France also had several nursing home residents unable to fight the disease. So elderly people are best protected in their homes not in nursing homes.

In countries like Asia, where joint families still thrive, elderly remain with their children not senior citizen homes and as such are protected from such diseases.
