Uma Desu: Chief Guest at AMLDA 2024 and Keynote Speaker at ICICT 2024 – Shaping the Future of AI Innovation and Research
Uma Desu, the Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer at GenAiPioneer, has been recognized as a leading authority in the field of Generative AI (GENAI) and its transformative impact across industries. Recently, he graced two prestigious events, delivering influential addresses that highlighted his deep expertise in AI and its future.
At the 7th International Conference on Applied Machine Learning and Data Analytics (AMLDA 2024), held at Vardhaman Engineering College, Uma Desu was invited as the Chief Guest. AMLDA 2024, a part of a long-standing series of conferences that have previously taken place in Germany (2023) and Mexico (2022), brought together leading researchers, practitioners, and students from around the globe. This year’s conference, hosted in India, underscored Vardhaman College's intellectual strength and research orientation.
During the inauguration, the Principal of Vardhaman College, Dr. Ravindra, addressed the importance of research in academia, urging students to focus on producing high-quality papers to enhance their technical prowess. Dr. Jabbar, the Head of the AIML department at Vardhaman, spoke about the college’s commitment to research, and how one of their students successfully competed with academic professionals worldwide, having their paper accepted for the conference.
Dr. Tasneem Bano, Program Chair of AMLDA 2024, also spoke about the vital role of innovation and research in the advancement of AI technologies. As the Chief Guest, Uma Desu took the stage to set the tone for the conference, sharing his insights on the current state and future of AI, particularly on the advancements leading to Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).
In his address, Uma Desu emphasized some of the most groundbreaking milestones in AI:
- DeepMind and Harvard’s Lab Rat Experiment: Paving the way towards AGI by mimicking human learning and reasoning.
- Jensen Huang’s Blackwell GPU: Revolutionizing deep learning models and accelerating the path to AGI.
- Google’s Quantum Willow: Integrating quantum computing with AI to unlock unprecedented computational power.
- Meta’s 3DGen and OpenAI’s Sora: Expanding AI beyond traditional applications to immersive, creative realms.
Desu also reflected on his 26-year journey in the intelligence field, where he pioneered the use of data to enhance strategic decisions, and how data continues to be a key driver in today’s AI systems. He discussed how AI has shifted from a tool to a central component in corporate strategy, with Chief AI Officers now playing critical roles in boardrooms worldwide.
One of the most striking points in his address was his discussion on The Forthcoming Decline of Traditional Coding. Desu highlighted how AI systems powered by innovations like the Blackwell GPU and Quantum Willow are enabling low-code/no-code platforms, democratizing AI development and making it accessible to a wider audience.
He also spoke about the exponential leap from AGI to Artificial Superintelligence (ASI), urging the audience to think critically about the rapid evolution of AI technologies and how we can guide them responsibly. With AGI Coming in 2025 per Elon Musk and Sam Altman, Uma Desu said that ASI will emerge ahead of its 2050 schedule by 2032-2037. AGI, Quantum Computing will accelerate Machine Learning and pave the progress to ASI much faster said Uma Desu.
A Visit to Vardhaman’s Innovation Ecosystem
Following the inauguration, Uma Desu and Dr. Tasneem Bano were felicitated for their contributions to the conference.
They were also shown Vardhaman’s Centre of Excellence for CSE, supported by partnerships with Mass Mutual and EverNorth. Additionally, Vardhaman's Idealabs Entrepreneur Cell was highlighted, showcasing the college’s efforts in promoting student entrepreneurship. Notably, the college has already nurtured nine startups, reinforcing its commitment to fostering innovation and self-reliance among students. At a time when many students are aspiring for higher studies abroad, Vardhaman students are creating opportunities for others by setting up their own firms.
Vardhaman Engineering College continues to be ranked among the top 10 colleges in Hyderabad for its research output and placement success, making it a significant player in shaping the future of AI education in India.
Keynote Address at ICICT 2024
Just a week earlier, on December 13-14, 2024, Uma Desu was invited as the keynote speaker at the International Conference on Innovative Computing Technologies (ICICT 2024) at Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology (CBIT), another top-ranking engineering institution in Hyderabad. CBIT, known for its intellectual rigor and research-driven approach, hosted this hybrid conference on cutting-edge technologies in AI, machine learning, cybersecurity, IoT, and more.
