Prohibition in India

Bihar Chief Minister advocated a Nation wide Ban on Liquor during a a convention on 'Alcohol-Free India' in Delhi on the weekend. Bihar implemented Total prohibition risking 5000 cr lost opportunity in taxes.
Gujarat,Bihar,Mizoram,Nagaland,Lakshadweep do not allow alcohol. India's directive principles ask states to strive to bring prohibition.Maybe the new government in 1950 should have made it mandatory prohibition in the country. Obviously there will be huge positive effects in increased savings in family, less violence and less diseases due to prohibition. The poorest families benefit the most from prohibition and hence Mahatma Gandhi advocated total prohibition.
Nitish had banned liquor totally in April 2016. High Court quashed that ban but Supreme Court reversed the stay clearly stating that it was not a fundamental right to drink liquor or engage in liquor business.Nitish yesterday also spoke about the 3 Crore Human Chain formed in Bihar against Alcohol. This chain was formed across 12000+kms in Bihar.Prohibitione had its social effects with reduced crime and rise in per capita spending in households.
Gujarat has implemented prohibition since 1960 while Mizoram banned it in 1997 and Nagaland in 1989.Tamilnadu was dry from 1953 till 1971. Haryana practised prohibition from 1996 till 2013. Kerala wanted to be on the path to total prohibition but left withdrew the ban on liquor. Gujarat despite prohibition has huge illegal liquor trade in the hands of politicians and liquor mafia.
